Caithness, Scotland (UK), 10 June 2015
M+W Group has been appointed as the lead design and safety case consultant for the Dounreay Shaft and Silo decommissioning project by Dounreay Site Restoration Limited (DSRL) in Caithness, Scotland.
Covering design, safety and environment case development as well as construction management support, this major 7-year contract forms an integral part of the programme of works to decommission and restore the Dounreay site.
The project will establish new retrieval, processing and packaging facilities that will enable waste from the Dounreay Shaft and Silo to be treated safely and securely, rendering it suitable for long-term storage and future disposal.
Used for over 40 years to store Intermediate Level Waste (ILW), the existing 65 metre deep shaft is the deepest storage area of its kind in the world and decommissioning the Shaft and Silo presents a number of unique technical and engineering challenges.
Key to securing the award was therefore M+W Group’s proven innovative design and project management approach, as well as the Company’s commitment to utilising and developing the UK’s nuclear industry supply chain. A particular focus is the use of specialist Small and Medium Size Enterprises (SMEs) in an integrated team structure. For the Dounreay project, M+W Group’s team will comprise key design partners; Oxford Technologies Ltd , 3T Safety Consultants and Sanderson Watts Associates.
Spencer Baber, Managing Director of M+W Group UK said “We are delighted to have secured this long-term contract with DSRL, a core strategic client for M+W Group. We are looking forward to applying our design, decommissioning and complex projects delivery expertise in this unique environment”.
DSRL Project Director for Shaft and Silo decommissioning project, Mike Gearhart stated, “DSRL is excited to begin the next stage of decommissioning the Shaft and Silo. The design and safety case production are key deliverables for our external stakeholders to ensure we are proceeding safely to reduce the risk posed by the nuclear material currently consigned to the Shaft and Silo.”
