M+W Group and Züblin to act as general contractors for a high-performance data center in Saxony-Anhalt
Germany’s largest data center will offer cloud computing services
M+W Group GmbH and Ed. Züblin AG will be acting as general contractors for a new, high-performance data center in Saxony-Anhalt that will be used by T-Systems International GmbH. The joint-venture project involves the expansion of an existing site in Magdeburg, as well as a new data center around 20 kilometers away in Biere. The two data centers will constitute a twin-core facility that will allow for maximum data and operational reliability. The completed facility, which will measure a total of 33,000 square meters in the final stage, will constitute a lynchpin of the rapidly growing cloud computing market and will be Germany’s largest data center operated by an IT provider.
The general-contractor agreement includes complete designing, purchasing and turnkey construction, as well as technical outfitting of the buildings, including the energy supply. The Magdeburg site will be a modular data center involving a new wing measuring around 1,800 square metres, while the Biere site will be a new data center campus (including office buildings) with IT space measuring around 3,600 square metres. The project, whose cornerstone was laid this past 24 October, is slated for completion in the spring of 2014.
The project will be carried out in accordance with the U.S. Green Building Council LEED standard, for which certification will be effected based on the LEED Gold Standard. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is an internationally recognised classification system for energy efficient and environmentally friendly building design. It defines exact standards for site concepts, water and energy consumption, construction materials, and environmentally friendly interior design. With a PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness) rating of under 1.3, the new data center will count as one of the most cutting edge and energy efficient facilities of its type. The PUE value is an indicator for all energy that will be used by the facility, relative to computer power consumption. Thus the PUE value indicates the energy efficiency of the facility as a whole.
