Hannover Messe: M+W Group presents a concept for competitive large-scale manufacturing of lithium-ion battery cells
Stand D60 (03) in Hall 27 At the Hannover Messe, which is to be held from the 19th to 23rd April 2010, the design and construction company M+W Group (formerly M+W Zander) will present its concept for achieving cost-competitive, large-scale manufacturing of lithium-ion battery cells.
In a model calculation, the company has compared the manufacturing costs for battery cells for different production volumes, which predicts that it will be feasible to achieve competitive volume manufacturing in a capacity range between 400 to 600 Megawatt hours per year (MWh/a). M+W Group has also developed the concept of a modular plant in order to meet these requirements.
The concept for large-scale manufacturing of battery cells integrates the various production stages ‘modularly’ under one roof. This essentially includes the preparation of the electrode slurries, subsequent coating of anodes and cathodes, assembly of the electrodes with separators and electrolyte filling, which is followed by an initial charging cycle (formation), and their conditioned storage. Individual production steps require extremely dry air (‘dry rooms’), constant temperatures and protection from air impurities and electrostatic charges, as well as special fire safety measures. The modular plant concept takes production safety and top manufacturing quality into account.
Production equipment comprise approximately 60 percent and the building and facilities an additional 20 percent of overall investment, therefore constituting the two largest cost elements. The incremental costs decrease as production volumes increase. As an example, the integrated use of the energy flow reduces the operating costs for the various manufacturing steps, such as transferring the waste heat generated during ‘coating’ for drying air and air conditioning. The efficient recycling of gases and solvents offers further potential savings.
